Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the economy, creating jobs, generating revenue, promoting innovation, and playing a critical role in the digital business landscape. Government data shows that they represent more than 94% of all companies operating in the country and 39% of the workforce in Abu Dhabi alone. However, they often struggle to secure significant sources of revenue such as procurement contracts with the government or large corporations, whose processes and regulations can be complex.
This is why, following studies and consultations with the sector, the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) launched in February 2023 the Abu Dhabi SME Champion Program. Supported by ADSME Hub and the first in a series of activities aiming to bolster SMEs’ growth in the Emirate, the Program helps them identify and increase their share of procurement contracts with large private companies and government-related entities (GREs), enabling them to scale up their businesses and play a greater role in Abu Dhabi’s economy.
Today, SMEs interested in checking if they’re eligible to unlock a total of AED45 million worth of procurement contracts can apply here.
Five of the largest corporations in Abu Dhabi – Etisalat, Aldar, Etihad Airways, Emirates Steel Arkan, and Ittihad Paper Mill – have pledged to offer procurement opportunities to the selected SMEs and will nominate specialised teams to work with their new suppliers on workshops and training, creating their own SME champions to drive forward the Program’s objectives. Future cohorts will see more large companies and GREs joining the initiative to support Abu Dhabi SMEs.
In addition, the Abu Dhabi SME Champion Program serves as an accelerator. It provides training and mentorship to upskill the selected SMEs through a customised delivery model, equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to compete in procurement pitches. It also cooperates with large companies and GREs to raise their awareness of small and medium businesses’ capabilities as trusted suppliers.
As part of ADDED’s efforts to provide a suitable environment for SMEs, bridge gaps in the ecosystem, and enhance their role in the country’s diversification strategy, the Program will allow small companies to compete on a level playing field, access significant and steady revenue streams, increase their credibility, diversify their customer base, and support their innovation capabilities.
